What should you look for when buying an instant camera?

For beginners, the differences between the most popular instant cameras are small at first glance. You take a photo and then immediately hold the result in your hands. However, the comparison is worthwhile. In fact, it is not only the price that distinguishes the cameras. Accordingly, you should be aware of the intended use in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises after the purchase.

The price: acquisition and running costs

While the Fujifilm Instax Mini 11 entry-level camera is already available for a tempting 70 bucks, the Polaroid SX-70 currently starts at 390 $. For the Instax Mini 11 (Instax Mini Film), you pay a little over 60 cents for each individual picture, depending on the package size. If you use the original Leica film (Leica Camera Instant Film) for the Leica Sofort, the cost per picture is already about 1.50 $.

Analog vs. digital

For purists the matter is clear: a real instant camera is analog. For such photographers, the charm lies precisely in the fact that, when prints are made, they do not know whether the picture will be successful as desired. The disadvantage is obvious. Every failed photo costs money. So-called hybrid cameras can help here. They offer the possibility to examine the picture before printing. In the case of the Canon Zoemini S there is even the possibility to edit the image via an app. Another advantage of the digital instant camera: photos are stored, so successful snapshots are no longer unique.

The picture format

Also here the spirits divide. While for some, only the typical 1:1 format of classic instant cameras comes into question, others appreciate the compact portrait format of an Instax Mini 11. The sticky-back picture of a Zoemini S also has its advantages. It is crucial to know the offered image format before buying.

The functions

There are also considerable differences between the models in terms of the range of functions. Classic variants such as the OneStep 2 Viewfinder from Polaroid offer a manageable number of functions. Overexposure and underexposure are the only modes with which the image can be adjusted. Popular models like the Instax Mini 90, on the other hand, come with a whole range of helpful modes. Custom modes for landscape photography or parties automatically adjust the camera settings to typical conditions. In addition, like other models, the camera has its own macro mode for close objects.

Checklist for the purchase of an instant camera

To be satisfied with the future instant camera in the long run, some points should be clarified in advance. With our checklist we try to offer a decision guidance to beginners:

  • How much is my budget?
  • What is the maximum cost of a picture?
  • What picture format should the camera offer?
  • What functions / modes should the camera have?
  • Should the pictures also be stored digitally?

Instant cameras are much more versatile than the first impression gives. The group of buyers is just as different as the cameras. While some prefer “point-and-shoot“, others attach importance to perfect results. However, if you take a close look at the different models in advance, you are guaranteed to find the right instant camera.
