What are Instax cameras?

As is often the case with technology, the instant camera market is full of confusing model names – and Instax is no exception. But what exactly are Instax cameras? Instax is the name given to the family of instant cameras from camera manufacturer Fujifilm. This also includes the corresponding instant films and photo printers.
What are the differences between Fuji Polaroid Cameras?
There are two typical factors that make the difference between the different models: Image size or format and the number of functions or ease of use of the instant camera. The popular Fujifilm Instax Mini 11 for example, is extremely easy to use. It is fully automatic, has an automatic flash and is considered a classic point-and-shoot camera. Fancy modes for different lighting conditions are not to be found here.
Our test winner, the Instax Mini 90 is characterized by a variety of modes such as a double exposure mode for creative people or the macro mode for close-ups. However, both cameras use the same film: Instax Mini Film.
Instax Films

For each Instax instant camera, Fujifilm produces in-house films. These differ only in format. But for many buyers the image format is one of the decisive criteria. Especially the popular Instax models do not offer the usual square image format. Instax cameras with the popular 1:1 format such as the Instax Square SQ1 or the Instax Square SQ6 are also available from Fujifilm. However, the square image of a Fujifilm Instax camera is still a bit smaller than classic Polaroid pictures (click here for current Polaroid models). For pictures in widescreen format it is worth a look at the Instax Wide 300.
Current Instax films:
- Instax Mini Film: 3:2 portrait format
- Instax Square Film: 1:1 aspect ratio
- Instax Wide: 2:3 wide format
For both, films and Instax series model names, the image format is included in the name as Mini, Square (SQ) or Wide. A table of current Fujifilm Instax cameras by film including detailed descriptions of the films can be found here. For an overview of instant cameras by image format click here.
Instax Printer
As an alternative to the instant camera, Fujifilm also offers photo printers under the brand Instax. So you can print any pictures as instant images. This is especially practical because the printers are suitable for on the go due to their small size. The Instax Mini Link prints in the popular Instax Mini format, for the square format you use the Instax Square SP-3 Printer.

CONCLUSION
Instax cameras from Fujifilm are among the most popular models for a reason. In the assortment there is something for everyone’s taste. Both in terms of image format and functionality. It’s no coincidence that with the Instax Mini 11 and the Instax Mini 90 two of the most popular instant cameras are made by Fujifilm.
